BEETHOVEN - Sonata for Piano and Violin Op.96 in G

This stunning program for violin and piano features one of Beethoven’s most elusive, stunning and original Sonatas; one of his most serene, and yet witty and extraordinarily conversational. To lead us there is an arrangement of one of Alma Mahler’s most heartfelt, timeless and rich works ‘Laue Sommernacht’; this can only be under described as ‘beautiful’! And opening this concert is one of Bach’s exciting Sonatas for violin and Cembalo.

BEETHOVEN - Sonata for Piano and Violin Op.30/3 in G

STRAUSS - Sonata for Violin and Piano Op.18

This stunning Sonata program for violin and piano features two virtuosic works; the first is Beethoven's sprightly and lively Sonata Op.30 no.3. This is paired with Richard Strauss's epic Sonata written in 1888 and widely considered one of the most passionate and rich works for violin and piano. 1888 was the year  Strauss first met the soprano Pauline de Ahna, whom he would later marry, and it is not hard to hear suggestions of romantic ardor in the lush lyricism of the work. Joining Kristian is the concertmaster of Orchestra Victoria, Sulki Yu, an accomplished, sparkling and brilliant performer who has recently moved in Melbourne from London.

SOPHIE ROWELL (violin)
KRISTIAN CHONG (piano)

In this charming sonata (now usually called a Sonatina) the nineteen-year-old Schubert appears to have been channelling the style of Mozart rather than that of his contemporary hero, Beethoven. The silent desolate landscape of Stanhope builds to an intense climax before returning to a renewed and altered form of stillness, and we conclude with Ravel’s highly original work in which he accentuated what he considered to be the essential “incompatibility” of the violin and piano, using new-to-Paris American blues and jazz inspirations.

Beethoven, Boulanger and Britten with Narroway and Chong

RICHARD NARROWAY (cello)

BEETHOVEN - Sonata for Piano and Cello Op.5 No. 2 in G minor
Nadia BOULANGER - Three Pieces for Cello and Piano

BRITTEN - Sonata for Cello and Piano Op.65

Accomplished Australian cellist Richard Narroway teams up with Kristian in works by Beethoven, Boulanger and Benjamin Britten. The Beethoven is one of the most virtuosic and dramatic Sonatas that exists, and is paired alongside French composer Nadia Boulanger, who was teacher, conductor, early music pioneer and trusted adviser to the likes of Stravinsky and Poulenc amongst many others. And Benjamin Britten is a fitting conclusion as an exciting, energetic and wonderful work not heard enough.

LIGETI - Trio for Horn, Violin and Piano
BRAHMS -  Trio for Horn, Violin and Piano Op.40

Ligeti wrote his formidable trio in 1982, as a companion to Brahms’ Horn Trio - one of the few other examples in the genre, marked Hommage à Brahms, and is a wild journey through its four movements, delivering every gamut of human emotion like its counterpart. Brahms’ trio is one of the canonic works of the chamber music repertoire, showing the vulnerability of human emotion in every way from love, despair, grief and triumph over all.

Principal Horn of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Nicolas Fleury, acclaimed Melbourne born violinist Brigid Coleridge from the US-based Merz Trio and Kristian provide a rare chance to hear these companion works played by three consummate musicians.
